A survey of local progressive blogs

Although not nearly enough, there are several good local progressive blogs that worth checking out. If you have any other suggestions, please leave them in the comments field.

'Blogging behind the Blue Line since 2005,' Adirondack Almanack is always a good place to find out information on environmental and other issues in the Adirondack Park. This piece and this one take a look at Gov. Spitzer's latest nominations to the Adirondack Park Agency.

This piece wonders if another Adirondack fire disaster is on the way. I'm no expert, but the state fire prevention system seems almost nonexistent, Almanack writes. There are no signs that warn of periods of fire danger on I-87 to alert Northway travellers, for instance. When fire danger is high, Adirondack counties have no widespread system to alert residents and tourists of the danger. When counties pass bans on open fires, locals almost never hear about them, let alone visitors.

Musings of a (Fairly) Young Contrarian had two recent essays of interest to followers of Green politics. The first condemned a handful of businesses in Lake George and Queensbury. The seven were fined by the state for violations of state labor law, accusing them of "breaking child labor laws, refusing to pay required overtime and deducting rent from wages." The affected workers were primarily from Eastern Europe and were invited to this country by the US State Department to fill a labor shortage. Great way to treat invited guests!

Another Musings essay pointed out the rather shocking fact that Warren County Democrats are so irrelevant that there were more REPUBLICANS running for office on the Democratic line in this month's local elections than Democrats. The blog also analyzed Board of Elections information and noted that over 80 percent of the offices up for grabs in Warren County will have no actual Democrat contending.

Matt's Totally Biased Commentary is another good read. This entry posts an opinion by Sam Smith on 'The Crash of the Democratic Party.' Like many Americans, Smith (and Matt) believes that the one-time progressive soul of the Democratic Party no longer exists. Take front-running presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton. Just look at those round her: there isn't one major figure directly involved in her campaign who represents the spirit or the substance of a decent and progressive Democratic Party. It is a cadre of cynical manipulators and fund raisers with dubious pals.

He also includes his testimony at Gov. Spitzer's health care forum held in Glens Falls a few months ago.
